Temperament

The English Setter can be described as a gentle, sensitive and friendly dog. They are very intelligent dogs and easy to train but they can also be willful. For this reason it is advisable to start training on an early age. English Setters are very energetic dogs who need plenty of exercise in a good sized fenced in yard. They need daily walks and they love to run free, if possible. English Setters are unsuitable for apartment living, they do better with a yard. They always want to be with their family and they are very good with children. English Setters are also excellent with other animals except, of course, birds and rodents. They enjoys to play with other dogs! English Setters are adequate watchdogs.

Health and Grooming

The English Setter is a relatively healthy breed. There are a few breed-specific problems: Canine hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia, canine hypothyroidism or congenital deafness. They are also quite prone to skin disorders and cancers. English Setters tend to gain weight easily, so it s important not to overfeed them. Their life expectancy is between 9 15 years. Grooming: The English Setter is an average shedder. This breed doesn t require a plenty of grooming. Comb and brush the soft coat regularly to keep it in good condition. The English Setter needs an extra care when it is shedding. Bathing only when necessary. Regular trimming of the hair under their ears and between their pads is a must.
